How much does a car key replacement cost in Anglesey?

The cost of a car key replacement depends on three things: the make of your vehicle, the type of key, and the job type (spare key alongside an existing key versus all-keys-lost). There is no fixed price that applies to every car — a 2010 Ford Fiesta with a basic transponder key is a very different job to a 2020 BMW with a proximity smart key.
What Michael will do is give you a fixed, confirmed price over the phone or by WhatsApp before any visit. There is no call-out fee, so if the price quoted does not work for you, there is no charge for the conversation. Key fob repairs average around £40. Full replacement and all-keys-lost jobs are quoted individually after Michael checks your vehicle details.

No. There is no call-out fee. Michael does not charge simply for attending your location. The price quoted over the phone is the price for the job itself — parts, labour and any programming required. Payment is taken on completion, either by card or BACS bank transfer. There are no additional charges added on site.
How do I pay? Do you accept card payment?

Michael accepts card payment and BACS bank transfer, both taken on completion of the job. You do not pay anything until the work is done and you are satisfied it has been completed correctly. No deposit is required to book a callout.
Why is an all-keys-lost job more expensive than a spare key?
+
When you have at least one working key, programming a second key alongside it is a straightforward process. The vehicle's immobiliser recognises the existing key and allows a new one to be added.
When all keys are lost, the process is more involved: Michael must access the vehicle's transponder security data from the manufacturer database (which requires SERMI registration), verify your ownership of the vehicle, access the immobiliser system through dealer-level diagnostic tools, and program a new key while ensuring all previous key codes are deleted — so any lost keys cannot be reused by someone else. This takes more time, requires more equipment access and carries more legal responsibility, which is reflected in the cost.
The best way to avoid this cost: get a spare key cut now while you have one. It is significantly cheaper to add a spare than to replace all keys from scratch.
Is there a warranty on the work?

Yes. All parts and labour carry a 12-month warranty. If a key or fob stops working within 12 months due to a fault with the work carried out, Michael will return and rectify it at no additional charge. The warranty covers the programming, the key blade and any parts supplied. It does not cover physical damage caused after the job is completed (dropped keys, water damage etc).
Can you make a car key without the original?

Yes. If you have lost all your car keys with no spare, a new key can be produced from scratch. This involves accessing the vehicle's immobiliser and transponder data from the manufacturer's security database — a process that requires SERMI registration (which Michael holds) and dealer-level diagnostic equipment.
Michael will need to verify your ownership of the vehicle before the job begins. Acceptable proof includes your V5C logbook, insurance certificate in your name, or a hire agreement. Once ownership is confirmed, a new key is cut and programmed to your specific vehicle, and all previous key codes are deleted from the ECU so lost keys cannot be reused.
What is the difference between a key cut and key programming?

Key cutting is the physical process of shaping the metal blade so it fits your lock cylinders — the door handle lock and ignition. A cut key without programming will physically turn in the lock but will not start the engine.
Key programming is the electronic process of registering a transponder chip inside the key to your vehicle's immobiliser system. Modern cars will only start if the ECU recognises the chip signal from the key in the ignition. Without programming, the engine immobilises itself immediately after the key turns.
Most jobs require both: the key blade cut to the lock profile, and the chip inside programmed to the ECU. Michael carries the equipment to do both on site in a single visit.
My key fob stopped working but the key still unlocks the car manually. Can you fix it?

Yes — this is a common fault and is usually one of three things. The most frequent cause is a flat or failing fob battery, which is easily resolved. The second is a hardware fault inside the fob — a damaged circuit board, broken button contacts or corroded battery terminals from water exposure — which may be repairable or require a replacement fob unit.
The third possibility is that the fob has lost its programming — sometimes caused by the battery dying at zero rather than being replaced promptly. Can you open my car without damaging it?

Yes. Michael uses non-destructive vehicle entry techniques — professional tools that work through the door frame or window seal gap without causing damage to the paintwork, door frame, lock mechanism or glass. This is standard practice for a trained auto locksmith and is how the car lockout service works on every callout.
Breaking a window or forcing a lock is never the approach unless there is a life-safety emergency (such as a child or animal locked inside in heat). In normal lockout situations, non-destructive entry is always possible on all common vehicle makes.
My key snapped in the ignition / door lock. Can you extract it?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a specialist process using fine-tipped extraction tools designed to grip and remove broken key fragments without damaging the lock cylinder. In most cases this can be done without removing the lock from the vehicle, making it a relatively quick repair.
After extraction, a replacement key is cut and, if required, programmed to the vehicle on the same visit. Michael carries the tools and key blanks needed to complete both parts of the job in one callout.
Can you repair or replace an ignition barrel?

Yes. Stiff, worn or seized ignition barrels are particularly common on higher-mileage Fords and Land Rovers. Michael can repair the existing barrel where possible, or replace it on site. On most vehicles this can be done without removing the steering column, which significantly reduces the time and cost compared to a main dealer approach.

Do you cut and supply car keys on site, or do I have to wait for parts?

For the vast majority of common vehicle makes — Ford, Vauxhall, VW group, BMW, Land Rover, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Peugeot, Toyota and others — Michael carries blank key stock and can cut and program the key on site in a single visit. There is no waiting for parts to be ordered.
For very unusual, rare or older vehicles outside his normal stock range, he will confirm key availability before visiting and give you a realistic timeframe. This is rare for the vehicle makes commonly found on Anglesey.

Do you come to my location or do I need to bring the car to you?

Michael comes to you. This is a fully mobile service — he arrives at your location with all the equipment needed to complete the job on site. You do not need to tow the vehicle, drive to a garage or arrange alternative transport. The location could be your home, workplace, a car park, a roadside or a supermarket — it does not matter. If you can tell Michael where the vehicle is, he will come to it.
Are you available on weekends and evenings?

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Saturday 10:00am – 12:00pm. Sunday is generally closed for standard appointments.
Emergency call-outs are attended outside these hours when Michael is reachable. What is SERMI registration and why does it matter?

SERMI (Security Registration) is the UK and European framework that controls who can legally access vehicle security data from manufacturers — the transponder and immobiliser data needed to produce a legitimate replacement key for a modern car.
To obtain SERMI registration, a locksmith must pass identity verification, a criminal record check and professional accreditation. The registration is renewed periodically. Not every locksmith in the UK is SERMI registered — and without it, they cannot legally obtain the security data needed to program a replacement key for most vehicles built after 2000.

What is a DBS check and why is it relevant?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check issued by the UK government. Michael holds an Enhanced DBS check — the most thorough level — which covers both standard criminal records and wider intelligence held by local police forces.
For a trade that involves visiting people's homes, driveways and workplaces — often when they are distressed and in a vulnerable situation — DBS clearance matters. It means you are inviting a background-verified professional to your location, not an unknown individual. Michael is happy to show his DBS documentation on request.
Do I need to prove ownership before you program a key?

Yes — proof of ownership or authorised use is required before any key is cut or programmed. This is both a legal requirement under the SERMI framework and a practical protection for vehicle owners against unauthorised key duplication.
Acceptable documents include:
- V5C vehicle registration certificate (logbook) in your name
- Insurance certificate clearly naming you as the insured
- Hire agreement or fleet management document if the vehicle belongs to a company

Are you insured?

Yes. Public liability insurance is in place on every callout. This covers any damage caused to your vehicle or property in the unlikely event something goes wrong during the job. Combined with the 12-month warranty on all parts and labour, you are protected both during and after the work is completed.
How do I know you are who you say you are?

Can you work on my Mercedes?

Most Mercedes models are covered. The exception is vehicles equipped with the FBS4 (Fast Book System 4) security system — typically found on Mercedes built from around 2019 onwards depending on model. FBS4 uses a proprietary security protocol that currently requires equipment only available through the Mercedes dealer network. This is not a limitation specific to Michael — no independent locksmith in the UK currently has access to FBS4 dealer tools.

Do you cover vans as well as cars?

Yes — cars and vans are both fully covered. Common vans attended include Ford Transit (all variants), VW Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro, Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Relay, Renault Trafic and Mercedes Sprinter.
Lost or broken keys on a working van are a serious operational problem — particularly for tradespeople who rely on the vehicle daily. Michael prioritises van callouts where possible. Call immediately on 07553 030134 if you are in this situation and he will give you an accurate ETA.
My car is quite old. Can you still make a key for it?

Generally yes. Older vehicles (pre-2000) often used simpler transponder systems or no transponder at all — which in some ways makes key cutting more straightforward, as it does not require accessing manufacturer security databases. Michael carries a range of legacy key blanks and transponder types covering vehicles back to the 1990s on most makes.
For very old vehicles, the main limitation is blank key availability rather than programming — if a blade blank for a rare older car is not in stock, he will confirm availability before attending. Call with your make, model and approximate year and he will advise straight away.
I am locked out of my car right now. What should I do?

Call Michael directly on 07553 030134. He will take your location, confirm an ETA and give you a fixed price before setting off. Stay with the vehicle in a safe location. Do not attempt to break in through a window — the cost of replacing glass is almost always more than the cost of a professional lockout service, and forced entry can damage the door frame and lock mechanism.

I have lost ALL my car keys with no spare. What happens?

This is the most serious key situation but it is fully solvable. Call Michael on 07553 030134 with your vehicle make, model and year. He will confirm he can assist with your specific vehicle and give you a quote.
Have your proof of ownership ready — V5C logbook, insurance certificate or hire agreement — as this must be verified before the job begins. Michael will then access the vehicle's security data, produce a new key cut to the vehicle's lock profile, program it to the immobiliser, and delete all previous key codes so any lost keys are permanently deactivated.

There is a child / pet locked inside the car. What do I do?

If a child or animal is locked in a vehicle in hot conditions, call 999 immediately. Emergency services are equipped and authorised to break a window in a life-threatening situation — this is the correct first action and takes priority over waiting for a locksmith.

My key works in the door but the car will not start. Is this a locksmith job?

Possibly — it depends on the cause. If the key physically turns in the ignition but the engine does not start (or starts briefly and immediately dies), this is often an immobiliser or transponder fault, which is within an auto locksmith's area of expertise. Michael can diagnose immobiliser faults, re-pair keys to the ECU and carry out ECU diagnostics to identify the cause.
However, if the engine cranks but does not fire, or there are other warning lights present, the cause may be mechanical (fuel, ignition timing, battery) rather than security-related — in which case a mechanic or roadside assistance service would be more appropriate. If you are not sure, call Michael and describe the symptoms — he will tell you honestly whether it is likely to be a locksmith job or not.
