Recent Job — Anglesey
BMW 3 Series — Holyhead
A BMW 3 Series owner in Holyhead had purchased a replacement key online — the blade was cut by a local locksmith but the transponder had never been programmed to the CAS module. The engine would not start. Michael attended, connected to the CAS system via OBD, registered the new key to the vehicle's immobiliser and confirmed both key fob functions and push-button start working on site. Completed in under an hour.
Why a Cut Key Won't Start Your Engine Without Programming
Every modern car key contains an electronic component — a transponder chip — embedded in the key head or housing. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the vehicle's engine immobiliser sends a radio signal to the chip. If the chip responds with the correct unique code, the immobiliser releases and the engine can start. If not, the engine cranks but immediately cuts out — or does not start at all.
Key programming is the electronic process of writing the correct code to a new chip so your vehicle's ECU recognises it. A key blade that has been cut to fit your lock but never programmed will open the doors but will not start the engine. Programming is the step that makes a key complete.
Michael uses dealer-level diagnostic equipment to access your vehicle's immobiliser system via the OBD-II port or direct ECU connection, write the transponder code, pair the remote locking signal and — for smart key vehicles — register the proximity key to the push-button start system. All completed on site in a single visit.
How key programming works — step by step
Key blank cut to your lock profile
If the physical blade is not already cut, it is shaped to your vehicle's door and ignition cylinder. Cut and program together in one visit.
Diagnostic tool connects to ECU
Michael connects to your vehicle's OBD-II port using dealer-level diagnostic equipment to access the immobiliser module.
Transponder code written to new key
The new key's transponder chip is programmed with the unique code that matches your vehicle's ECU. For smart keys, the proximity signal is also registered.
Remote locking paired and tested
The remote locking fob signal is paired to your vehicle's receiver. All functions — lock, unlock, start — confirmed working before Michael leaves.
Situations That Require Key Programming
Key programming is needed any time a new transponder chip needs to be paired to a vehicle's immobiliser — whether for a new key, a spare, a replacement or a re-pairing after a fault.
New key blank purchased online
If you sourced a key blank or a pre-cut key and it needs programming to your vehicle, Michael can pair it on site for most makes. Call first to confirm compatibility with your specific model.
Replacement key after damage or loss
A replacement key that has been cut needs programming to the ECU before it will start the vehicle. Michael handles both cut and program as a single job.
Spare key alongside existing key
Adding a spare key requires programming the new key to the immobiliser alongside the current working key — a straightforward and cost-effective process.
Fob replacement after repair
When a fob is replaced due to a fault, the new unit needs pairing to your vehicle's central locking receiver and immobiliser. See the full fob repair service for details.
Smart key or keyless entry system
Smart keys and proximity cards require an additional step beyond transponder programming — the keyless entry and push-button start system must recognise the new key's proximity signal. Michael's equipment handles this for most makes.
After all-keys-lost job
Following a lost car keys job, all previous codes are deleted and a new key is programmed from scratch. Programming is the core of the all-keys-lost process.
Which Chip Types Does Michael Program?
Different makes use different transponder chip families. Michael's equipment covers all common systems found in vehicles on Anglesey and Gwynedd.
Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Peugeot and most other makes are also covered. Call with your VIN or registration for a compatibility check.
