Recent Job — Anglesey
Ford Focus — Amlwch
A Ford Focus owner in Amlwch snapped her key in the driver's door lock during a cold morning — the blade sheared at the shoulder. Michael attended, extracted the broken section using specialist extraction tools without removing the lock from the door, then cut and programmed a replacement key on site. The lock was undamaged and the vehicle fully operational within the hour.
Key Snapped in the Lock? Here's Why Specialist Tools Matter
A broken key in a lock cylinder is not a job for improvised tools. Using a screwdriver, needle or knife blade to try to dig out a broken key fragment almost always makes the situation worse — pushing the fragment deeper, scratching the cylinder walls or damaging the wafers inside the lock. A damaged cylinder means a lock replacement job instead of a simple extraction.
Michael uses specialist broken key extractor tools — fine-tipped, hooked instruments designed to grip the serrated edge of a broken key blade and draw it out without contacting the lock cylinder walls. In most cases the lock does not need to be removed from the door or ignition to complete the extraction, keeping the job quick and cost-effective.
Once the fragment is out, a replacement key is cut and programmed on the same visit — so the vehicle is fully operational before Michael leaves. There is no need to arrange towing, visit a dealer or wait for parts.
Do not try to extract the key yourself. Improvised tools — screwdrivers, paper clips, tweezers — commonly push the fragment deeper or damage the lock wafers. A damaged cylinder turns a simple extraction into a lock replacement. Call Michael first and let the right tools do the job.

Call and describe where the key broke
Tell Michael whether the key broke in the door lock, boot lock or ignition. Also whether any part is still accessible above the cylinder. He gives a fixed price and confirms he can attend. Call 07553 030134.
- 2
Michael assesses the fragment position
On arrival, he assesses exactly how far the fragment is inside the cylinder and which extraction approach is best for that specific lock type and vehicle make.
- 3
Fragment extracted without lock removal
Specialist extractor tools are used to grip and withdraw the broken blade. In most cases this is done without removing the lock cylinder from the vehicle — no dismantling required.
- 4
Replacement key cut and programmed
Once the fragment is out, a new key is cut to the lock profile and programmed to the immobiliser on site. Lock confirmed working, vehicle fully operational before Michael leaves. 12-month warranty on all work.
The Four Locations Keys Snap
Broken key fragments can be found in any lock cylinder on the vehicle. Each location requires a slightly different approach — Michael's extraction tools cover all of them.
Driver's door lock
The most common breakage point. Keys are inserted under the most pressure here — particularly in cold weather when the cylinder is stiff or the lock mechanism is worn. Front passenger door is the second most common.
Boot / tailgate lock
Less common but still occurs — particularly on older vehicles where the boot lock receives less maintenance. The boot cylinder is often smaller and breakages can be harder to reach for extraction.
Ignition barrel
A key snapped in the ignition barrel is one of the more serious situations — the vehicle cannot be started until the fragment is removed and the ignition operational. See the ignition barrel repair page for additional context.
Padlock or steering lock
Less common on modern vehicles but can occur on older models with physical steering locks. Extraction follows the same process — specialist tools, no force.
What Causes a Key to Snap?
Keys rarely snap without warning — there are usually signs of a developing problem before the blade breaks. Understanding the cause helps prevent it happening again on the replacement key.
Worn or weakened key blade
A key that has been used daily for several years develops microscopic stress fractures at the shoulder — the narrowest point just above where the blade meets the plastic head. Under torque, this is where it snaps.
Stiff or worn lock cylinder
A lock cylinder that has not been lubricated, or whose internal wafers are worn, requires more force to turn. That extra force is applied directly to the key blade. WD-40 is not the right lubricant — a dry PTFE spray or graphite powder is the correct product for lock cylinders.
Cold weather and frozen cylinders
Attempting to turn a key in a frozen lock cylinder applies maximum torque against a seized mechanism. A frozen lock should be thawed first — de-icer applied to the key or lock, not force applied to the blade.
Key copied from a worn original
A key cut from a worn original may not be cut precisely enough to engage the lock wafers cleanly, causing it to bind. Repeated forced turns accelerate blade fatigue.
After extraction, Michael will assess the lock cylinder for wear and advise if a barrel repair or replacement is also needed.
Broken Key Extraction — Makes We Cover
Michael extracts broken key blades from most makes of car and van. Ford, BMW and Land Rover are his primary specialisms (red highlights).
Ignition barrel note: If the key has broken inside the ignition barrel and the barrel itself is damaged, a barrel repair or replacement may be needed alongside extraction. See ignition barrel repair.

Services Often Needed Alongside Extraction
Broken key extraction is rarely the only thing needed — a replacement key, spare key or barrel repair is typically completed on the same visit.
Car Key Replacement
Once the fragment is extracted, a full replacement key is cut and programmed on the same visit. The most common service completed alongside extraction.
Car Key Replacement →Ignition Barrel Repair
If the key snapped in the ignition and the barrel is damaged, a barrel repair or replacement may be needed alongside the extraction.
Ignition Barrel Repair →Spare Car Key
After a breakage, getting a spare key programmed alongside the replacement prevents a similar situation in the future. Done on the same visit.
Spare Car Key →Car Lockout Service
If the key snapped while the car was locked with the other key inside, a non-destructive lockout entry is needed first before extraction.
