What Is ECU Diagnostics?

Warning Lights, Fault Codes and Vehicle Electronics — Diagnosed On Site

Every modern vehicle contains an Engine Control Unit (ECU) — the central computer that monitors and controls engine performance, transmission, emissions, safety systems and more. When a sensor detects a fault, it stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in the ECU and illuminates a warning light on the dashboard.

Without the right diagnostic equipment, these codes are invisible. A mechanic or technician connecting a generic OBD-II code reader gets a basic read. Michael's dealer-level diagnostic equipment reads not just standard OBD-II codes, but manufacturer-specific codes — the deeper fault data that pinpoints the actual component or circuit at fault rather than just the system affected.

This matters because the same warning light can mean dozens of different things. A generic reader might return "P0300 — Random Misfire" which tells you very little. A full dealer-level read identifies which specific cylinder, which injector, which sensor — allowing the right repair rather than guesswork.

Michael also specialises in immobiliser and transponder diagnostics — the intersection of ECU work and auto locksmithing. When a vehicle won't start because the ECU doesn't recognise the key, or when a key was programmed incorrectly, he diagnoses and resolves the fault on site. ECU diagnostic equipment connected to a vehicle on site in Anglesey

Recent Job — Anglesey

Vauxhall Astra — Bangor

A Vauxhall Astra owner in Bangor had an engine management light that had been on for three weeks with no apparent drivability issue. A previous garage had cleared the light without diagnosis — it returned within two days. Michael attended, connected dealer-level diagnostics and identified a stored fault for a failing crankshaft position sensor — a fault the generic reader at the garage had not captured. The owner was referred to a mechanic with the specific fault code and sensor reference, avoiding an expensive and unnecessary investigation.

Diagnostic Services Covered

What Michael Can Diagnose On Site

Full fault code reading (OBD-II)

All vehicle fault codes read from the OBD-II port using dealer-level diagnostic equipment — covering engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, body control module and all other ECU systems. Full report of stored and pending codes before any advice is given.

Immobiliser & transponder diagnostics

Vehicle cranks but won't start? Immobiliser active when it shouldn't be? Michael diagnoses immobiliser faults, transponder communication errors and lost key programming — often resolving issues that appear as key or starting problems. See key programming for re-pairing solutions.

ECU cloning & replacement support

When an ECU needs replacing — due to water damage, electrical fault or module failure — Michael can clone the existing ECU data to the replacement unit, preserving the vehicle's key codes and configuration. Eliminates the dealer visit for ECU swaps on most common makes.

Fault code reset & clear

After a fault has been identified and repaired, Michael resets the warning light and clears the fault codes from the system. Codes are not cleared without diagnosis first — clearing without addressing the cause will simply result in the light returning.

DPF & emissions system diagnostics

DPF load reading, EGR valve fault codes, lambda sensor issues and other emissions-related fault codes diagnosed on site. See the full DPF cleaning service for filter regeneration after diagnosis.

Live data monitoring

Beyond fault codes, Michael's diagnostic equipment can display live sensor data — fuel trims, injector pulse width, coolant temperature, boost pressure and more — helping to identify intermittent faults that don't always trigger a stored code.

Common Warning Lights Diagnosed

What Does That Warning Light Mean?

Warning lights are the vehicle's way of signalling that a fault has been detected and stored. The light itself tells you a system is affected — the diagnostic code tells you what specifically is wrong. Without reading the code, there is no reliable way to know what the repair is.

Engine Management Light (EML)

The most commonly misunderstood warning light. Can indicate anything from a loose fuel cap to a failed catalytic converter. Never ignore a flashing EML — this indicates a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. A solid EML is less urgent but should be diagnosed promptly. Michael reads the full fault code set to identify the exact cause.

Immobiliser / Security Light

Flashing padlock or key symbol usually means the immobiliser is active when it should not be — often due to a key programming fault or a failed transponder chip. Michael diagnoses immobiliser faults and re-pairs keys where needed.

DPF Warning Light

Diesel particulate filter has reached a critical soot load. Requires forced regeneration — Michael reads the DPF load percentage first to confirm the filter is a regen candidate before attending with the DPF cleaning service.

ABS / Brake Warning

ABS module or wheel speed sensor fault. Diagnostic reading identifies which sensor or module is at fault. ABS faults should be assessed promptly as they affect braking performance — refer to a mechanic for repair after diagnosis.

Glow Plug Warning (diesel)

A flashing glow plug light on a diesel engine usually indicates an engine fault rather than just a glow plug issue. Requires a full fault code read to identify the specific cause.

Transmission Warning

Automatic gearbox fault. Can indicate anything from low fluid level to a failed solenoid or TCU fault. Diagnostic reading before any gearbox work prevents unnecessary expense.

How a Diagnostic Visit Works

ECU Diagnostics — Step by Step

Michael's diagnostic visits follow a clear process — you know exactly what was found and what it means before any further work is recommended.

  1. 1

Call with your vehicle and warning light

Tell Michael the make, model and which light is showing. He confirms he can diagnose your vehicle and gives a fixed price before attending. Call 07553 030134.

  2. 2

    Dealer-level connection via OBD-II

Michael connects dealer-level diagnostic equipment to the vehicle's OBD-II port. This reads all stored fault codes — both standard OBD-II codes and manufacturer-specific codes that generic readers miss.

  3. 3

    Full code report explained clearly

Every stored and pending fault code is read and explained in plain language — what system is affected, what the likely cause is, and whether further repair or investigation is needed.

  4. 4

    Live data check where applicable

For faults that benefit from live sensor data — misfires, fuel trims, DPF load, boost pressure — Michael monitors real-time values to confirm the diagnosis or identify an intermittent fault.

  5. 5

    Codes cleared after confirmed repair

Warning lights are reset only after the fault is confirmed as resolved. If the fault requires a mechanic, codes are left for the repairing garage to verify. DPF-related codes are cleared after a successful forced regeneration.

Immobiliser & ECU Faults

When the Problem Is the ECU, Not the Mechanic

A significant number of “car won't start” problems are not mechanical — they are electronic. The engine turns over perfectly, fuel is present, the battery is charged, but the vehicle simply won't fire. In many of these cases the engine immobiliser is preventing the engine from starting because it doesn't recognise the key signal.

This is the unique intersection of auto locksmithing and vehicle diagnostics that Michael specialises in. Where a mechanic sees a starting problem, Michael sees an immobiliser or transponder fault — and can both diagnose and resolve it on site without sending the vehicle elsewhere.

Engine cranks but immediately cuts out

Classic sign of an immobiliser fault — the engine fires briefly but the ECU kills it because the transponder signal from the key wasn't recognised. Michael can diagnose the exact immobiliser fault code and re-pair the key if needed. See key programming.

Key works but car intermittently won't start

Often a failing transponder chip — the chip is degrading and only sometimes communicating with the immobiliser. Diagnostic read confirms whether the fault is transponder, immobiliser module or a wiring issue.

After a key replacement or programming attempt

A key that was incorrectly programmed — or partially programmed — can cause persistent immobiliser faults. Michael reads the ECU state and re-programmes the key correctly. Related: lost car keys service.

ECU replacement — cloning service

When an ECU is replaced, the new unit needs to have the vehicle's key data cloned from the old unit — otherwise the immobiliser will not recognise any keys. Michael carries out ECU cloning on site, avoiding a main dealer visit for most common makes.

FAQ

ECU Diagnostics — Common Questions

What Anglesey and Gwynedd drivers ask most about warning lights and vehicle diagnostics.

Call Michael → Full FAQ page →
What is the difference between an OBD reader and dealer-level diagnostics?+
A standard OBD-II reader (the kind plugged in at many garages or available from motoring shops) reads generic SAE standardised fault codes — a limited set that covers basic powertrain faults. Dealer-level diagnostic equipment also reads manufacturer-specific codes — deeper proprietary fault data that only the vehicle manufacturer's own tools or equivalent dealer-grade equipment can access. This is the difference between knowing 'engine fault' and knowing exactly which sensor, circuit or component has failed. Michael uses dealer-level equipment for all diagnostic visits.
My engine management light is on but the car drives fine. Do I need a diagnostic?+
Yes — the light being on means a fault has been detected and stored, even if you cannot feel it yet. A stored fault left unaddressed can worsen, affect fuel economy, cause an MOT failure (a fault-related EML will fail an MOT) or develop into a more expensive repair. Call 07553 030134 and Michael will read the fault and explain what it means — whether it needs urgent attention or can wait. The diagnostic is the only way to know.
Can you diagnose a car that won't start?+
Often yes — particularly if the starting fault is electronic rather than mechanical. If the engine turns over but won't start, or starts and immediately cuts out, the cause is frequently an immobiliser or transponder fault that Michael specialises in. If the engine doesn't crank at all (no turning over sound), the fault is likely electrical — battery, starter motor or relay — and a mechanic or roadside assistance is more appropriate. Call with the symptoms and Michael will advise before attending.
How much does an ECU diagnostic cost?+
Michael gives a fixed price before visiting — no call-out fee. The cost covers the full diagnostic read, code report and explanation. If follow-on work is needed that Michael can carry out on site (key programming, DPF regen), this is quoted separately. Call 07553 030134 with your vehicle details for an immediate quote.
Can you reset the warning light without repairing the fault?+
Michael does not clear fault codes without diagnosing the underlying fault first. Clearing codes without addressing the cause simply turns off the light temporarily — it will return, often within a short drive. The correct approach is to identify and resolve the fault, then clear the code. If the fault requires a mechanic, Michael provides the code report for the repairing garage to work from.
Can you clone my ECU if I need to replace it?+
Yes — for most common makes. When an ECU is replaced, the new unit needs to have the vehicle's key codes and configuration cloned from the original — otherwise the immobiliser will not recognise any keys and the vehicle will not start. Michael carries out ECU cloning on site for most makes, avoiding the need for a main dealer visit. Call with your make and model to confirm compatibility.
Is a diagnostic reading the same as an MOT emissions test?+
No — these are separate processes. An MOT emissions test measures what is actually coming out of the exhaust at a given point in time. An OBD diagnostic reads the fault codes stored by the vehicle's ECU. A fault code that causes the EML to illuminate will result in an MOT failure regardless of the emissions reading. Michael's diagnostic service reads and clears the codes that affect the MOT, but is not a substitute for the physical emissions test at the testing station.
